Turbulent Shear Flows

Hans-H. Fernholz

TU Berlin

Some aspects of the manipulation of complex turbulent shear flows: A brief review will be given on Sonderforschungsbereich 557 "Control of complex turbulent shear flows" at TU Berlin. This special research project deals with the manipulation of flow separation and aerodynamic noise as well as with theoretical investigations of low systems described by the Navier-Stokes equations. In the second part of the seminar three cases of flow manipulation will be described:
  1. Manipulation of a plane turbulent wall jet
  2. Reduction and elimination of a separation bubble by free-stream turbulence
  3. Reduction of the length of the separation region downstream of a sharp-edged fence in a boundary layer by a loudspeaker-slot actuator.
