Maximum entropy moment closures

Michael Junk

Department of Mathematics, University of Konstanz, Germany

The numerical solution of kinetic equations generally suffers from the high dimension of the phase space. Moment methods are therefore derived from the kinetic equations to reduce the problem to a system of equations defined on a lower dimensional space. If the required closure is based on a maximum entropy argument, the moment systems seem to possess interesting mathematical properties. But sometimes appearances are deceiving ... In the talk, the maximum entropy closure is introduced and its advantages and disadvantages are discussed.
